Invisible Sunset

This past weekend in Gainesville/University of Florida was a lot of fun. Out at the bars Friday night (everyone looked 22, though Jeff assures me they were all 18), a hat tournament on Saturday (appropriately named “Heatstroke”; pictures soon), and drifting down the crystal clear, spring-fed Ichetucknee River for four hours on Sunday.
Today’s photo is from last night; as we were leaving work we spotting an amazing thing: the sun was still 20 degrees from the horizon, but because the cloud/African dust storm layer was so thick, it appeared as just an orange disc, easy to look at. I raced home in an attempt to get a picture, but on the way it nearly disappeared. I set up the tripod anyway, just to see what my camera could do with it, and to my amazement you could see the sun quite easily, much easier than with the naked eye. So, there you are. The Canon Powershot G3 takes good shots of the sun when it’s very hazy. 🙂 Click for the big version.

I just said they were likely 18 with fake ID’s. I’m pretty sure there were some 17’s there to check out the University before starting their freshman year :).

The cow is a nice touch…and that trip down the river sounds like –
“row row row your boat gently down the stream
    merrily merrily merrily
    life is but a dream”
