Tasky

Software developers will understand this probably a little better than others — you know how, when you leave a bunch of files open on your computer, things can get kind of unstable?
Well, that’s kind of how I’m feeling at work right now — I’m the computer, and my tasks are the files.
Okay, that was a little far fetched. But it seems like lately, I’ll be in the middle of one thing get asked to drop it and concentrate 100% of my time on something else. Here’s the thing… I have no problem adding tasks to my plate. That’s fine. Just adjust the schedule accordingly and be clear about how it’s going to affect deadlines. As it is right now, things just get pushed “off the radar” and get left dangling. Aurggh!!!

  1. you are living my life. and then a week later i remind someone that something never got completed because i was working this other thing and it starts all over again.
it’s a constant battle, and it’s been this way at every design job i have ever had.

  2. The really dumb part is, I am permitted no time to work on the other tasks. This obviously means deadlines are going to get pushed. But since I can never get a clear answer about how much they’ll be pushed by, in essence they don’t change. And then I get in trouble for missing them.

  3. yup, sounds about right, someone sent me this today, i’ve read it before, but it’s particularly funny because it’s true:
    HOT AIR?
A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted:
“Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.”
The woman below replied: “You’re in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You’re between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude.”
“You must be in Information Technology,” Said the balloonist.
“I am,” replied the woman. “How did you know?”
“Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is technically correct, but I’ve no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help at all. If anything, you’ve delayed my trip.”
The woman below responded, “You must be in management.”
“I am,” replied the balloonist, “but how did you know?”
“Well,” said the woman, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise, which you’ve no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is, you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it’s my fault.”

    1) Alison: that is a brilliant example!
    2) postit notes help, but also clutter
    3) even in my little job i feel the pain, and very much so today.

  5. alison: wow, that was funny. 🙂
hillibilli: (1) it’s not so much that i’m forgetting about the other tasks– i’m remembering them, and i’m not allowed to charge time towards them. (2) hope things turn around soon.
