Cam and Melissa Hallowe’en night
So I spent about an hour tonight genre-fying my music collection, and while most of it went well, a few left me with big-fat question marks. So I need your help.
How would you classify the following artists?
- The Prodigy
- Orbital
- Depeche Mode
- Massive Attack
- Frank Zappa
- The Beastie Boys
- Daft Punk
- William Orbit

I would classify the following artists as “The shit!” You have good taste in strange music ๐
prodigy, orbital, depeche mode, massive attack, beastie boys & daft punk: stuff to listen to really loud and bounce to!
don’t know frank or william so no comment
how I love depeche mode, just thoght I would begin with that and I would say they belong in a techno genre/brit pop. It depends on the album, as does it for the rest of the artists.
‘nee: thank you!! ๐
hil, i can’t say i’m a frank zappa expert myself, either, but what i have heard from him is pretty unique and brilliant. one of the most creative musicians i’ve ever heard. check out zappa.com. william orbit is a very talented electronic music composer and producer. do you remember the track “ray of light” by madonna? mr. orbit produced it. from the william orbit biography at theiceberg.com: “he has worked on tracks by a diverse and prestigious range of artists including: Sting, Belinda Carlisle, OMD, Julian Lennon, Les Negresses Vertes, the Human League, Gary Numan, Prince, Shakespears Sister, Malcolm McLaren, Erasure, S’Express, Propaganda, the Cure, Seal, the Shamen, Kraftwerk, Scritti Politti, Peter Gabriel, the Christians and All Saints.”
I own his albums “Strange Cargo III” and “Pieces in a Modern Style”, both of which I recommend highly.
kev: depeche mode is brit pop i suppose, though i think they’re somewhat darker than the name implies. techno-gothy brit pop? ๐
neil, regarding atb: apparently the guy has some range after all. from an amazon top-100 reviewer:
“I honestly can’t say that I am a ATB fan. I have always thought of him on the velveeta cheesy side of trance music. I had one of his cds (“Two Worlds”) and just thought it was pretty boring and flat for trance music. I was at Border’s the other day and I decided to listen to a few tracks off “Addicted to Music”. Much to my surprise, I liked what I heard. The music is still on the cheesy side but this time in a good way. Then again, trance music is the [illegitimate] child of dance music. It is rarely taken seriously except when the music is by the likes of BT, Moby, Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyke, George Acosta, and DJ Tiesto. It has been awhile since I last listened to anything by ATB so perhaps over the past year or two, Andre actually bettered himself as a dj. Now bad cheesy trance music is DJ Sammy who should be tarred and feathered for his covers of “California Dreaming”, “Heaven”, and “Boys of Summer”. ATB has actually improved since I gagged on “Two Worlds”. I am always a sucker for the use of female vocals. That is just me. I loved the instrumental “Gentle Melody”, the melody of to the song is quite gentle and has a dreamy quality to the song. The other instrumental song “Sunset Girl” is very good too. I love the piano melodies wafting through the techno beats. There was not one song that turned me off. I honestly enjoyed every single song on “Addicted to Music”. I hope ATB keeps making records as good as “Addicted to Music” is ’cause he may have converted a non-fan out of me.”
who knew?
well…I was always against ATB being called trance right from the very beginnings of his career, but what can you do?
krishen: I didn’t, hehe ๐
