Essence of You

Well, now that I’ve managed to alienate all of my readers with talk of Buffy and Ultimate, perhaps it’s time for a post on something else? (I did play tonight ๐Ÿ™‚
Jeff proposed an interesting idea a couple days ago: make an “Essence of You” playlist. The songs in the playlist should be reflective of who you are (not necessarily what you listen to on a regular basis). The only restriction is that the total time must not exceed the length of an audio CD — 79 mins or so.. let’s say 74 to be on the safe side. There’s no restriction on the number of tracks or the length of the tracks. If you think one big long track describes you best, well that would be fine.
I’ve started “Essence of Krishen” and man is it tough. 74 minutes really isn’t long enough to describe me! But that’s what makes it so interesting. I’ve only got a few tracks so far, but I will post it as soon as I’ve got it worked out. I am challenging you, the krishenblog reader, to come up with your own “Essence Of” playlist. Once you’re satisfied with it, send it to me, and on Wednesday, I’ll post the results here.
Link fun:
* Ouch. Sony introduces what looks to the iPod’s first serious competition. While I think the iPod still has fundamentally better physical design (based on what I can see from the product shot on the news page) [and a better moniker: the Sony player is called the “NW-HD1 Network Walkman”; for something that weighs just four ounces it’s sure got a clunky name], at a comparable price, the Sony has 30 hours of battery life compared to the iPod’s eight. Pretty hard to ignore.
* The New York Times interviews Ronald Reagan’s son. Seems like a pretty sensible guy to me (via eclecticism).
Tonight’s photo is from the archives — downtown St. Pete, taken a couple weeks ago. Haven’t been out with my camera nearly enough. Hope to rectify that soon. ๐Ÿ™‚
Happy Canada Day everyone!

  1. Mine’s up on my blog. I tried to trackback but I can’t figure out how – never could. Oh well. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Very cool Sue. ๐Ÿ™‚ For trackbacks, next time you’re in MT, choose Weblog Config->Preferences->scroll about 80% down and make sure “Turn on Trackback auto-discovery?” is checked.

Sony apparently doesn’t play mp3’s only their format.

  4. That is true, however (if I recall correctly) the computer software that transfers music to/from the player converts MP3s, WAVs etc to their format on-the-fly, so it becomes a non-issue.

  5. gotta include some Pet Shop Boys like “Being Boring” heheh

  6. Davin, heh… there will definitely be some Pet Shop Boys in there, not sure if it will be “Being Boring”, but it’s up there.
The trouble is there’s not a direct mapping between what I listen to and who I am (I like to explore all sorts of music), so I’m thinking my playlist some kind of blend between what I listen to the most and what I identify with.
Jeff, perhaps you could lend some insight here?

  7. i am on the task! what a great idea, it’s also going to take a little while, i’m thinking about how such a list would change from season to season, from year to year. i think being boring would perennially (sp) make the list for me, i’m tempted to pop on that track now and wander back.
    watch for me by wednesday!

Me personally I would gravitate more towards identification. But this isn’t really about the rules so to speak. More an exploration into describing yourself without words. The type of music you listen to may be a large part of who you are. My guidance is this, make the CD something you could give to a stranger and say this is me. You’ll know if you’ve succeeded if they finds the words to match what you were trying to say with music. In my case I’m probably going to end up psychotic…but that might not be far off. BTW I love the perenially idea…that would be killer to see the change over time and events in one’s life. And possibly influences from the coming and going of other, so many dynamics.

  9. Jeff: excellent, thanks for the clarification, I shall work with that. I like the perennial idea also.
Jim: Cool! I am looking forward to it ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Reagan’s son isn’t a complete tool because he never actually spent any time with his father, or his mother, ever. Says a lot about Ron being a family man, eh?

  11. ‘Nee: Very interesting… makes sense. That article was the first I’d heard of the guy. Showed Mom the article last night during a videochat (actually, I showed her the eclecticism quotes, as she didn’t have a NYT account) and she asked if it was satire.
