Trust me, you were lucky to hear about this before your parents. Parents have a special radar concerning crime/disaster and the city in which you live. Somebody could jaywalk in Sarasota and your parents will be telling you about it.
No doubt. They also called me hours after the Toughman contest went wrong (well, more “wronger” than it already was). Not sure how they know so quickly.
