Frances

So… this afternoon, as I was checking what the weather would be like in Victoria for next Wednesday evening’s special event (more info soon!), Carlos happened by my cube and asked if I was checking what the path of Hurricane Frances. For those that don’t know, it’s looking like Florida is going to get hit by another hurricane, even though we’re still recovering from Charley. Come on, I know Charley was because of the botched election, but what’s this one supposed to be for?
I hadn’t even been thinking about it yet, Frances wasn’t supposed to make landfall until a few days after the beginning of Sept. Oh, wait, never mind. Carlos went on to say the airport is probably going to be closed… I can forget about my flight home.
No!!! That’s my vacation we’re talking about here!
My flight is supposed to leave Tampa shortly after 7am Saturday. Looks like there’s hope yet, though. According to the most-recent data weather.com has (this afternoon), it looks like I might just squeeze that flight in after all. Here’s Frances’ projected path:

So far I’ve read that this data is still pretty shaky, so I’ll be keeping you all up-to-date on the status of things. As for my apartment… well, I’ll be ready with the masking tape.

  1. Oh boy … here we go again. Though, my prediction is that it scraps the eastern coast and heads north … it “might” graze Orlando. Seems they pull north east – but learned from Charley, as long as you are in that yellow cone … be concerned, you never know what these things will do.

  2. Hurricane prediction is more of an art than a science. While generally speaking, they do tend to turn north and east as they get into the higher latitudes, there are no guarantees of where it will go. Andrew started up the east coast of FL, stopped, made a hard left turn, and headed straight across Homestead and into the Gulf.
So, keep alert. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. And all those other appropriate clichés.

  3. Dude, I write this at 10 a.m. thursday, and all I can think is….. GET OUTA DODGE….. NOW!!!!!
At least you are not in the West Palm Beach or Miami Beach area.

Well K, what I say is the same as before — do all you can, then sit back and enjoy the show. Hopefully this one isn’t too damaging, but we’ll have to wait and see if this leaves some good footage.
You’ll make it out of there yet!
