would like to know what it’s like to hear your ankle go “pop” and then see 20 faces looking down at you, asking if you’re okay — let me know.
Left ankle. There’s no swelling, but I can’t point my foot without it hurting. Actually I can’t anything without it hurting.
With all the pain, though, I’m still excited. Tonight I get to see the Barenaked Ladies! It’s going to be awesome. And the Mac rumor mill is frothing over the possibility of a “headless” (i.e. without a monitor) iMac being introduced at Macworld Expo on January 11th for $499.
So, at least, lots of stuff to keep this fanboy’s mind elsewhere.
Are you ready for 2005? 🙂

For the past three days or so I’ve been walking around in a kind of zombie state. My mind has been totally preoccupied on the Indian Ocean earthquake which took place four days ago. Julie’s weblog has been an invaluable tool in learning about the situation. Thailand was devastated by the resulting tsunami; she was there just one month ago.
I’ve tried to post a few personal things since Sunday and everything has just come out utterly inconsequential. How can I write about my … well, my anything… when there are things of far greater importance going on? Things which I’m still trying to comprehend. Just yesterday the death toll doubled over what it was the day before. Now it’s at 84,000. Crazy. I was talking with Jeff about it today and he said he wouldn’t be surprised if it reaches 200 thousand. I hope not but I secretly worry he is right. 🙁
My thoughts are with those who have been affected by this tragedy.
Update, 11:32am: The death toll has now reached 116,000, with 80,000 coming from Indonesia alone. Apple has changed their main web page to point to humanitarian aid organizations. I did a quick survey of several other major companies (including Dell, Microsoft, IBM, Starbucks, Yahoo, CNN, and BMW), and Google and Amazon were the only others I found had done this. Kudos to Apple, Google and Amazon for that.
Update #2, 3:19pm: Kirk House at Reasons Unbeknownst has put together a large collection of video clips from the tsunami and has “seeded” it using BitTorrent. If you’re not sure what that is, not to worry, he explains in the entry.
Update #3, 12:47am the next day: Microsoft, Starbucks and Yahoo are now prominently displaying links to relief agencies on their main pages.

  • Happy holidays

I’d like to thank everyone who has sent me Christmas wishes over the past few days. This may sound weak, but it’s a nice feeling to know you’re thought about, even when you’re not physically present. Amazing what a simple “hi” can do. If you have friends you haven’t spoken to for a while but have meant to, do it. I promise you they’ll be thankful even if they don’t outwardly show it.
Lots going on around this time of year — Christmas, Hanukkah, Three Kings Day, Diwali, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa, Chinese New Year, to name a few events off the top of my head. I hope everyone is enjoying themselves, whatever they’re up to.
Having Mavis over has been great fun so far. She brought all sorts of goodies from Canada — Soho liqueur, Tim Horton’s coffee, a Coffee Crisp, smarties, cherry candy canes, Canadian flag tootpicks, and a UVic alumni sticker and a card signed by near about a dozen of my old co-workers (thanks to all of you, by the way, I enjoyed it immensely :). We’ve watched movies, cooked lunch and dinner, Scrabbled, gone Boxing Day window-shopping (note: Best Buy is out of iPods) and enjoyed a good meal at Jeff’s with Kai.

I must say it was an odd feeling not being with my family at Christmas. My first time. It didn’t really strike me that I’d feel any different, but yeah, it was. I miss being woken up by Neil and trying to get Anand out of bed so we can go check out our stockings. Heh. It’s become pretty clear to me that their company is worth a lot to me. Which I knew already, but the point was driven home yesterday. I did at least get to see everyone on an iChat AV videochat, so that was something.
